The problem with new champs is that they cost you something, specifically one of Riot's point types. While the early adopters will always be around, the savvy shopper will get as much feedback as he or she is capable before deciding on a purchase. We're here to help you with that.
Below we've compiled the reviews and impressions on Darius from the top names in the community, be they professional, journalist or somewhere in between. Read and watch to your heart's content, and let these pros and fans help you make your decision.
(Apologies for the super long delay on this; I was on vacation all last week and simply couldn't get this article up before I left.)
- Curse Gaming's Saintvicious: "First impressions are that this champion plays a lot like Riven. To be honest, WTH was Riot thinking releasing this. 900+ damage on ultimate with no CD on execute? Come on..."
- ggChronicle's Obscurica: "Apparently, he’s already been banned in tournaments using the live patch – his raw damage output is just that high. Due to his lack of defenses, playing him as a traditional tanky bruiser is probably suboptimal – but with Youmuu’s Ghostblade and Infinity Edge, perhaps it isn’t out of the bounds of probability to play him as a melee carry."
- ColbyCheeze: "You have to keep in mind that you'll do twice as much damage if you have your passive stacked. You need to be patient; if you see someone with low health, attack him one or two times and use your abilities to get those stacks up and then do maximum damage with your ultimate."
- Team SoloMid.EVO's Wingsofdeathx: "He's being advertised as a top laner, but I feel he's more attractive as a jungler. ...He can keep people with him, but he can't gap close that well. The passive armor penetration is nice, and lends him more toward that bruiser/tanky-DPS role rather than an actual tank."
- Team SoloMid's Chaox: "PENTAKILL!"
- Reign of Gaming's Stonewall: "Well this guy is truly a man. He can’t gank so well and he has pretty much no health, sustain or resistance to invasion but he clears like a champ and hurts like a train carrying trucks. His weak mobility won’t give him the best invasive powers like Shyvana and Dr. Mundo but he can severely hurt junglers he catches running around."
There are a lot of League of Legends sites out there, and most of them have a lot of bloggers. It's a tall order to keep up with all of it, but don't you worry; we'll do it for you. We like you that much.
Each week, we'll keep track of the best blogs, vlogs, podcasts, sites and articles from the rest and compile them into one handy (and also dandy) post for you to use as a guide to the week's League of Legends happenings. But we're not perfect. Did we miss something? Let us know.
It's been awhile since our last update, and we hopefully won't make that the norm. (As always, however, there are zero promises.) That said, it seems like we could've taken a more organized approach to this, so here's a different take on it. If it's popular, we'll roll with it! If not, we'll head back to the old ways like the cowards we are.
ggChronicle

Most League of Legends players are familiar with the swapping period of draft mode, where participants can choose to swap their champ with another player on their team. At the highest levels of competitive play, champ swapping is a regular occurrence, with early picks being used to form team comps and strategies, or to just ensure one team ends up with high priority champs.
The professional teams, meanwhile, have taken this to acompletely different level.
Shakeup, Shakedown
The changes began yesterday with Crumbzz announcing he'd left Team Curse. Crumbzz cited personal reasons for his decision to leave Curse; as teams gear up for the major prizes at season 2's end, priorities had to be made. From his statement, it sounds as though Curse will be moving into a gaming house to better prepare for the championship. As a student, Crumbzz elected to continue pursuing education over prioritizing his professional gaming career.
News quickly broke after that Saintvicious had joined Team Curse:
But if you weren't paying attention to the League forums yesterday, you wouldn't know that this decision was because top laner Voyboy had joined Counter Logic Gaming. Speculation suggests HotshotGG wanted Saintvicious to lead the announced but unformed CLG "B" team, a move Saint was not interested in. Otherwise, it's possible that CLG simply felt adding Voyboy improved the team regardless of the potential roster shuffle and fallout. Either way (or perhaps other factors were involved), with Voyboy joining CLG as the new top laner and Saintvicious gone, HotshotGG has moved to the jungle position.
With Curse's roster quickly filled and CLG's revamped and reshuffled, Team Dignitas remained the only team in need of a fifth player. Turns out we'd be brought full circle; Crumbzz was announced as Dignitas' new player, taking over top lane (as I Will Dominate is the current jungler). The move is slightly suspicious as Dignitas is known to be traveling to Korea for the next OGN competition, but with most of Dignitas being students AND players, it's likely that he was able to make his schedule work with the trip.
Fallout! Er, Fall Top. Y'know What? Just Fall.
CLG and Dignitas have unquestionably suffered setbacks. While CLG must think it's better in the long term with Voyboy instead of Saintvicious, the reality is that HotshotGG is learning a new role, and Voyboy is learning the mannerisms of new teammates. It's difficult to envision an easy transition; CLG struggled out of the gate after adding Doublelift and moving Chauster last winter, and it simiarly struggled in the Reign of Gaming invitational with this new roster, losing to TSM.EVO... though in CLG's defense, this roster couldn't have been newer.
Dignitas, meanwhile, seems more the victim of circumstance than anything else. It's difficult to envision a scenario where Voyboy felt he had to leave because he wasn't getting along with his teammates; it's most likely that he felt CLG presented the best opportunity for his career. In acquiring Crumbzz, Dignitas essentially took the best player available out of the pool of competitive "free agents," even if he's not currently a top lane player. Like CLG, Dignitas is willing to gamble that a talented player can quickly learn a new position and become as good as the other players of that role. Time will tell how this works for both Crumbzz and HotshotGG; role changes of this variety are few and far between, and never have we had so many relevant players in the conversation.
In all likelihood, Curse will be least affected by these changes. No players are changing roles, and Saintvicious is widely regarded as one of the best junglers in the NA circuit. He and Curse support player Elementz have played together in the past and maintained a good relationship with one another after Elementz left CLG. Additionally, Saintvicious found success working with mostly new teammates during WCG Korea. So we know he's a good player and we know adapts well to his circumstances. However, Curse will continue to be plagued by the same problems it always has; player availability. Pobelter still does not meet the age requirements to compete at many venues. Beyond that, Curse is notorious for always needing a substitute or three every time it travels.
I'm most interested to see how long the leash will be for these players on their new teams. New players often put additional pressure on themselves to "prove" they belong in the organizations they've joined, and this can lead to mixed results. With competition cracking down in preparation for the season 2 circuit championship, I honestly wonder if the teams involved will give their new players the opportunity to succeed before considering other avenues for improvement.

The problem with new champs is that they cost you something, specifically one of Riot's point types. While the early adopters will always be around, the savvy shopper will get as much feedback as he or she is capable before deciding on a purchase. We're here to help you with that.
Below we've compiled the reviews and impressions on Varus from the top names in the community, be they professional, journalist or somewhere in between. Read and watch to your heart's content, and let these pros and fans help you make a decision.
- Team Curse's Cop: "Varus' role is to initiate team fights and do lots of AoE damage. His ultimate is like an Ashe arrow, but it spreads to other enemy champions. He can then follow it up with lots of AoE physical damage and AoE slow/heal debuff. If played right, he can also out-harass most AD carries bottom lane."
- ggChronicle's Optimus Tom: "He feels reminiscent of Ezreal, Kog'Maw, Miss Fortune and even Twitch; once you get the hang of Varus' skillset and the overall power this champion has to offer, you'll feel right at home in the bottom lane with him, ladies and gentlemen."
- Team Dignitas' Spell: "Best build is as typical AD carry. You have good trading possibilities on lane. The only thing that this champion lack is escape ability, but with Ultimate Snare, AoE Slow on his E and Flash as Summoner spell you should be quite safe in team fights. With amazing passive and really good range you can make good trades on botlane (especially with Sona or Taric)."
- ColbyCheeze: "He's actually a really good mid-laner due to his really nice poke and range. He has a very effective slow and a high-damaging root, so this adds a lot of utility to him as well. So, not only can you play him in a solo lane, but he also works like any other AD carry -- great with a support in the bottom lane. Probably best with someone like Soraka just because of his high mana costs."
- ggChronicle's Obscurica: "'Delayed gratification' seems to be Varus’s calling card. He can have great burst – if you’re patient. He can snipe you from across the screen – if you’re patient. He can immobilize the entire enemy team – if they don’t move away from the first afflicted party member in time. As is with a true sniper, Varus’s play style is mostly a matter of patiently waiting for the right circumstances, then exploiting it as efficiently as possible."
- ShureLily's Shurelya: "It's always great to be able to play a DPS that can engage, like Ashe. This is an advantage, especially in solo queue since you're going to be the heavy damage dealer on your team. This way you can fight on your own terms when you're ready."
We've gotten away from covering DevTalk here at State of the League. In fact, I barely even remember how to use the red quote formatter thing. Sometimes, however, pretty serious news breaks, and in those times a man has to re-learn what he has learned.
It shouldn't come as a suprise, but the always excellent Moobeat caught the following (super important) red quotes:
In brief, we are exploring various hypotheses we have about sources of noise in Ranked Ladder. Removing F2P champions ultimately raises the barrier of entry into Ranked Ladder slightly (such that you must now own 16 champions to play Ranked); secondarily, players tend to be more experienced with Champions they own, so that might help reduce the fluctuations in skill we are observing.
So, at the very least there's now one less argument players can use about being stuck in this "ELO hell" I hear so much about.
But I doubt that'll stop. People like to do their complainin'. Makes the heart feel good.
